Las especies arbóreas se clasifican de la siguiente manera:
Caducifolios
Son aquellos cuyas hojas se caen en otoño o invierno y retoñan en primavera. Este grupo está compuesto por especies como el roble, almendro, olmo, sauce, manzano y muchos árboles frutales.
Perennifolios
Se caracterizan por mantener sus hojas todo el año; van renovando su follaje poco a poco. A este grupo pertenecen el olivo, encina, ficus, entre otros.
Coníferas
Son árboles de hoja perenne; algunas especies de esta clasificación son de hoja caduca, como el ciprés de los pantanos. Este grupo cuenta con esta denominación debido a que produce conos que protegen las semillas; una vez maduros, éstos se abren, la semilla es liberada y se transporta por el viento. Ejemplos de este grupo son el pino, ciprés, abeto, tejo, etc.
Palmeras
Botánicamente no se clasifican como árboles, sin embargo, ‘en jardinería se denominan especies arbóreas’. Ejemplos de este grupo son la palmera datilera, kentia, palmera real, etc.
